Colin,
Great articel. We share 2 things in common. I too am the father of a daughter with a severe peanut allergy that did not express it until 5 years of age when a teacher had them making crackers with apple slices and peanut butter. Life has changed ever since. THe poor kid misses out on so much at birthday parties and such. No peanuts, no foods made with peanut oil, no foods made in plants whre peanuts may be used and on and on.

Second, we love our pets. In fact we bred dogs. It is not well known but most if not all towns put limits on the number of dogs you can own ( most at around 5) . It took us nearly two years to find a property location where we would not be hampered by this law. I can understand the concern in implementing such a law, however, the end result is usually more restrictive on the few who will ever have a desire or need to own more than 5 dogs than it is beneficial to those who would be helped in limiting the ownership of all to such a level. I too fear the government's further intrusion into lifestyle choices we make, such as animal ownership, and whether my child, an avid dog lover, will be able to continue our endeavors with dogs when she is an adult.
